The average age of onset of menopause process is 51 years old. But there is no single method to predict when a woman will enter menopause. The age at which a woman starts having menstrual periods is also not related to the age of menopause onset. As a rough "rule of thumb" women tend to undergo menopause at an age similar to that of their mothers.

Early Symptoms of Menopause

The symptoms of menopause can be divided into early and late onset symptoms. Early symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Mood changes
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Stress
  • Vaginal dryness and itching
  • Irregular periods
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Weight gain and decelerated metabolism
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
  • Loss of breast plumpness

Late Symptoms of Menopause

Late symptoms will start to emerge after your menopause, which will lead to some certain medical conditions. Here are some of the long-term health problems that are tied to menopause:

Heart Disease
When you have menopause, your oestrogen levels will deteriorate, thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Throughout the first few years after menopause, a lot of women may lose bone density more rapidly thus increasing the risk of osteoporosis. This condition causes bones to become brittle and fragile, leading to an increased risk of fractures especially on their hips, wrists and spine.

Urinary Incontinence
In this case the tissues of your vagina and urethra lose elasticity and because of that, some women may experience urinary incontinence as well as increased risk of urinary infections.

Sexual dysfunction or Decreased Libido
As the genital organs shrink with the decrease in hormonal support, there could be difficulty with intercourse and decreased pleasure derived. Decreased lubrication is also common.

Each of the above issues and symptoms will be addressed by your gynaecologist and handled sensitively with due respect to the individual’s needs and desired treatments.
