Dedicated to Helping Women Ease into the Next Stage in Life Smoothly
What is Menopause?

Menopause is a normal and natural event in women’s lives that marks the end of their menstrual cycles. This is measured by a woman having gone 12 months without a period.

The average age of onset of menopause process is 51 years old. However, there is no single method to predict when a woman will enter menopause—the age at which a woman starts having menstrual periods is also not related to the age of menopause onset. As a rough "rule of thumb" women tend to undergo menopause at an age similar to that of their mothers.

Menopause is popularly described as an uncomfortable and frustrating time of women’s lives, but it doesn’t have to be.

Dr Ann Tan, a gynaecologist of over 20 years, is experienced in helping women manage menopause with ease.

Early Symptoms of Menopause

The symptoms of menopause can be divided into early and late onset symptoms. Early symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Mood changes
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Stress
  • Vaginal dryness and itching
  • Irregular periods
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Weight gain and decelerated metabolism
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
  • Loss of breast plumpness
Late Symptoms of Menopause

Late symptoms start to emerge after menopause, which increases the risk of certain medical conditions. They include:

  • Heart Disease After menopause, women’s oestrogen levels drop, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Osteoporosis Throughout the first few years after menopause, a lot of women may lose bone density more rapidly, thereby increasing the risk of osteoporosis. This condition causes bones to become brittle and fragile, leading to an increased risk of fractures, especially on their hips, wrists and spine.
  • Urinary Incontinence In this case, the tissues of the urethra lose some elasticity and strength, thereby increasing the risk of urinary incontinence.
  • Sexual Dysfunction or Decreased Libido As the genital organs shrink slightly along with the decrease in hormonal support, there could be difficulty with intercourse. Decreased lubrication in women is also very common.
Making Menopause Manageable

Most women actually do not require treatment for menopause, with symptoms being relatively mild and then resolving on its own. However, women with more severe symptoms that are affecting her physical and psychological health, may require more intervention.

Overall, treatment options include:

  • To Ease Aches and Stiffness: Regular Exercise and Relaxation Techniques
  • To Ease Constipation: Eating Foods High in Fibre
  • To Ease Hot Flushes: Wear Cool Clothing, Avoid Caffeinated Drinks, Avoid Warm Baths
  • To Ease Vaginal and Urinary Tract Issues: Use a Water-Based Lubricant before Intercourse and Practice Good Personal Hygiene
  • To Ease Severe Symptoms: Hormone Therapy or Low-Dosage Oral Contraceptives
At Women Fertility & Fetal Centre, we believe that women deserve to be healthy and comfortable at every stage in their lives.

To that end, we provide personalised advice and treatments within a supportive environment.
