What Causes Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign growths that develop in and around the uterus. Varying in size, number and their locations, they affect about 30% of women aged 35 years and above.

Certain factors contribute to the growth of these fibroids such as: high levels of estrogen and progesterone especially during a pregnancy, genetics and age.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Though generally considered to be harmless, uterine fibroids can cause serious complications like heavy bleeding and infertility. Below are some signs to take note of:

  • Heavy menstrual flow
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation and bloatedness
  • Pelvic and abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath and giddiness

Treatment for Uterine Fibroids

A detailed examination, which may include physical examination, blood tests and ultrasound scans, is essential in order to check the degree and size of the fibroids before offering treatment. Some of the treatment options include:

Pain Relievers

If your uterine fibroids are causing minor pain, over-the-counter pain relievers may be prescribed.

Hormonal Medication

Hormonal medication helps to decrease bleeding during menses, and can be used as momentary symptom relief. It also helps to reduce the size of the fibroids.

Surgical Treatment

If you are experiencing severe symptoms such as heavy bleeding and painful cramps, or if the fibroids are overly big or growing in size, surgery for fibroids may be recommended.

  • Myomectomy
Surgical removal of uterine fibroids without removing the uterus.
  • Hysterectomy
Surgical removal of the uterus, usually recommended when the fibroids are unusually large or cancerous
  • Uterine Artery Embolization
Minimally-invasive surgery that cuts off blood supply to the fibroids, thereby causing them to die off
